This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.
1965
The State Department admits that non-lethal gases which cause temporary immobilization had been supplied to the South Vietnamese armed forces by the United States. The announcement is met with worldwide criticism led by the Soviets and North Vietnam protesting the instigation of poisonous gases into the war. State Secretary Dean Rusk dismisses the allegations insisting that they had not embarked on gas welfare, rather, gases used were merely those used by police on
protesters.
1968
President Lyndon Johnson makes public the nomination of General William Westmoreland as Chief of staff of the army. General Creighton Abrams replaces Westmoreland as the new commander of the United States forces operating in Vietnam. Westmoreland had initially been applauded when the war had begun but later blamed by many when things turned sour over the Tet offensive. The Vietnamization program launched by President Nixon administration now lay upon General Abrams for implementation.
1974
The Viet Cong presents an armistice to both the United States and South Vietnam. The ceasefire if agreed upon, would bring about the suspension of hostilities to all parties and a general election to democratically elect new leaders in the region. This was after suffering massive defeats on their forces.
