1962

A C-123 aircraft crashes while sprinkling a defoliant chemical on one of the Viet Cong ambush sites. It became the first United States Air Force aircraft to be lost in South Vietnam. The plane was carrying out Operation Ranch Hand which involved the use of technological area denial techniques tailored to bring out infiltration routes and trails used by the Viet Cong. About 19 million gallons of the defoliating chemicals were dumped over Vietnam in the operation.
