This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.


The 8th battalion of the Northern Vietnamese 66th regiment launches a surprise attack on the first cavalry division in what would be later called the battle of la Drang Valley. The unit was massively ambushed while moving in the jungle in large columns from all sides. Most of the soldiers were hit since the engagement was in tight quarters that limited the use of support power which would have risked endangering American lives.


1ST Lieutenant William Calley court marshalling begins. Calley had been a platoon leader in Charlie Company, 20th infantry, 1st battalion and 11th infantry of the 23rd American division. He steered his men in a massacre of Vietnam civilians including children and women at My Lai on 6th March 1968. The massacre was initially suppressed but came to light a year later.
