This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.


The United States pilots conducting Operation Farm Gate missions are given the go-ahead to engage in combat operations. The Geneva Agreements signed in 1954 restricted flying of bomber aircrafts into the Indo-China region hence the United States B-26 and SC-47 were renamed as reconnaissance bombers. The bombers were only allowed to fly the combat missions on condition that a Vietnamese crew member was on board.


The commander of the United States Military Assistance Command in Vietnam, General William Westmoreland requests for more troops to be deployed in South Vietnam. In a statement to Secretary Robert McNamara, Westmoreland appealed for an additional 243,000 troops to add to the 200,000 men who were already operating in South Vietnam. His reason was a deteriorating South Vietnamese military force losing about 500 men per week.


In a media conference in Washington, the National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger announces that the North Vietnamese delegates had walked out of the ongoing confidential Paris Peace talks. The central point of disagreement between Kissinger and the North Vietnam officials was about who would rule South Vietnam after a cease-fire agreement was agreed upon. The North preferred a new coalition government while the United States supported President Nguyen government.
