1965

Additional $700 million for the Vietnam War is requested by Pres Johnson during the remainder of the year. After approved by Congress 2 days later Johnson states additional funds may be needed.

1970

Four students attending Kent State University were shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard during anti-war protests on campus grounds. This only leads to more protests.

1971

The May Day protests threatened to bring Washington DC to a halt. Since the govt did not stop the Vietnam War they claimed that they would stop the government. Protesters claimed it was their goal to stop more troops from being sent to Vietnam

1961

The Pathet Lao (communist rebels)and government troops declared a cease fire in Laos. JFK contemplates military intervention in Laos but held off as the cease fire reduced tension between the U.S. and the Sov Un.

1964

Viet Cong commandos detonate an bomb on the USS Card. The ship was in the Saigon River. It sank killing 5 americans sailors.

1963

U.S. Army intelligence releases bulletin “Enemy Presses Hard on Shaky South Vietnam Regime.”

It states that the Viet Cong attacks that occurred in March were at an all time high (1,860+) and were larger in scale.

1972

Quang Tri is overtaken by communist forces, the communist’s biggest accomplishment of the the Easter Offensive.
