This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1963

Lt. Col. John Paul Vann left Vietnam for the United States. He met with and briefed officials at the Pentagon about the situation in RVN. He was also invited to speak to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on July 8. But this was rescheduled at the last minute, apparently by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Maxwell Taylor. He planned to say that the body counts ARVN listed of Viet Cong killed were over exaggerated and included many non soldiers and that use of artillery alienating the Vietnamese people.

1971

Lt. Calley, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the My Lai massacre but was then transferred from Leavenworth prison to house arrest.
