This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1959

The United States Military Assistance Advisory group in Saigon reports that South Vietnam troops were conducting military operations against Viet Cong guerrillas and dissidents. Effective operations against the militia groups brought about release of most of the Vietnamese military units from pacification missions. Military training and assistance from the United States developed an army of 150,000 South Vietnamese soldiers to repel invasions from the North.

1970

6 out of 9 justices decline to hear a court case brought forward by the state of Massachusetts concerning the constitutional legality of the Vietnam War. The challenge brought forth by Massachusetts residents claimed that under the protection of a state law, they were constitutionally right to refuse military service in the undeclared Vietnam War.
