This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1961

VP Johnson goes to S. Vietnam. His instructions are to make President Diem believe in our confidence in him. Johnson calls him the “Winston Churchill of Southeast Asia.”

Kennedy sent a letter with his Vice President approving from 150,000 to 170,000 more S. Vietnamese soldiers and says the USA was prepared to consider further increase.

The funding in military aid was not to be conditioned by Diem, but Diem turned down Kennedy’s offer to bring over American combat troops, stating it would only be a propaganda win for the Viet Cong.

1967

Starting today and ending on 1 July 67, Operation Malheur I and Operation Malheur II kicked off. The two operations were carried out by the US Army to subdue the increase in activity brought on by the Vietcong forces.
