This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1961

General Curtis LeMay of the United States Air Force requests the Joint Chiefs of Staff to try and convince President John Kennedy to endorse introduction of a sizeable combat task force into South Vietnam. President Kennedy was against the idea of introducing foot soldiers in the already escalating war between communist and South Vietnam forces which were losing. He opted instead for economic support and advice towards South Vietnam Leadership.

1966

The United States Air Force together with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam repulse a mortar and sapper attack on the Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base by the Viet Cong. The attack started in the early hours of the previous day taking more than 24hrs for a full repulsion. Tan Son Nhut Air Base was a major air base used for offensive and support for ground troops in South Vietnam.
