1966

The assistant managing editor of the New York Times Harrison Salisbury compiles a report from Hanoi outlining the damage suffered by North Vietnam civilian areas as a result of the United States bombing campaign. Salisbury report aroused mixed reactions in Washington with irritated Pentagon officials calling it an exaggeration. The department of defense later conceded to the report stating that American pilots had accidentally bombed civilians while targeting military installations.

1972

The United States recommences Operation Linebacker II after a 36 hours interlude for Christmas. According to the United States officials, the Christmas bombing was rekindled because North Vietnamese officials sent no word concerning the Paris Peace talks. North Vietnam negotiators had walked out of the peace talks in Paris with Henry Kissinger the United States National security advisor.
