This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1961

The USS Core ferry carrier docks on the shores of Saigon for the first time. On board were the first United States helicopter units in Vietnam consisting of 33 Vertol H-21C Shawnees together with 400 air and ground flight crew to operate and maintain the helicopters. The core aim of the helicopter units was to airlift South Vietnamese Army troop to war zones for combat.

1969

The United States Paratroopers from the Third Brigade 82nd Airborne Division are withdrawn from Vietnam. The unit had been deployed to Vietnam in February 1968 as a countermeasure after the communist Tet attack. It was attached to the airmobile 101st airborne division with a mission of protecting the ancient city capital of Hue. The withdrawal was part of the Vietnamization program initiated by President Nixon.
