This timeline is meant to keep track of what was both happening on the battlefield, politically and at home in the USA during the Vietnam war.

1967

The Viet Cong releases three United States prisoners, two of them African American in a ceremony at Phnom Penh. They were turned over to Tom Hayden, an American anti-war activist. The Viet Cong claimed that the release was as a result of the antiwar demonstrations in America and a goodwill gesture towards the bold struggle of blacks in the United States.

1968

Operation Commando Hunt is launched in South Vietnam by the United States armed forces. The operation is set afloat to cut off Communists routes being used to infiltrate South Vietnam through Laos. The aerial campaign consisted of intensive bombing operations conducted by the United States air-force, Marine Corps, and navy aircrafts. About 3 million tons of bombs were detonated over Laos during the operation lasting till April 1972

1972

Long Binh military base which was once the largest military installation outside the United States mainland is handed over to the South Vietnamese government. It included quite a number of supply depots, ammunition deports and logistics installations. It had earlier on served as the headquarters for the United States Army and 1st logistics command in Vietnam.
